Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett toured portions of San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent private lands during her recent personal visit to southeastern Arizona on April 12, 2008.  Private landowners (and refuge volunteers) Wendy and Warner Glenn from the Malpai Borderlands Group hosted Ms. Scarlett, and showed the Deputy Secretary several projects on the refuge.  These included a new wetland impoundment currently under construction for management of endangered fish, and the border vehicle barrier previously constructed along one-mile of the refuge boundary with Mexico to help provide national security while preventing habitat damage from illegal entry into the United States.  Cooperation between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Homeland Security was discussed.  An excellent birder, Deputy Secretary Scarlett was able to see and hear a large diversity of neotropical birds during the peak of their migration north through the San Bernardino Valley.  A number of nesting birds, such as the vermilion flycatcher, yellow warbler, and gray hawk are currently present at San Bernardino NWR in good numbers.  The visit was very positive, and the excellent cooperation between various divisions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Malpai Borderlands Group was highlighted.
