Operation Jacob!
Northeast Region, October 18, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On October 14, 2007, Jacob Allen from Morgantown, WV was reported missing in Dolly Sods late Sunday afternoon.  Dolly Sods is part of the Monongahela National Forest located on the border of Grant, Randolph and Tucker County, WV.  Dolly Sods has over fifty miles of trails and thousands of acres.  Jacob and his mother and father were all hiking on the Boarsnest Trail when the separation occurred.  Due to Jacob's autism, the search for him was unusually hard.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife was one of the one hundred and eleven groups and hundreds of people that had shown up during the four day search and rescue operation.  Representing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the search was refuge officer Brett Hartwig, and refuge biologists Ken Sturm and Leah Ceperley.  The search and rescue finished up Thursday afternoon with best possible outcome.  Jacob was found less than fifty yards away from where he was lost.  Jacob was a little dehydrated and scared but was overall doing just fine.
