Rachel Carson National Wildlife RefugeHosts 4th Annual Summer Photo Contest
Northeast Region, August 31, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Between June and August 2007, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge hosted its fourth annual Summer Photo Contest.  The contest was open to amateur photographers of all ages. A total of twenty-three photos were submitted from visitors across the country.  All photographs were taken at the refuge with themes ranging from wildlife and landscape to public use and recreation.  One touching entry entitled Nature's Senior Moment portrayed Mary Firth against a lush forest background.  Attached was the following note from the photographer, Jane Firth (CA):   "The Rachel Carson NWR is a wonderful experience for every one of all ages.  My mom, Mary Firth, is 99 years old.  She has lived in Kennebunkport most of her life and had never been to the refuge.  It was easy to push the wheelchair along the trail.  The natural beauty and the peace and quiet made for a delightful day.  Thank you for this wonderful opportunity." A lavishly illustrated hardcover edition of Rachel Carson's A Sense of Wonder was awarded as first prize to James Haklar.  Second and third place prizes were presented to Jane Firth and Diane Godbout, respectively. The refuge would like to thank all contestants: Kimberly Lambert (MA), Diane Godbout (NH), Kevin Brown (NJ), James Haklar (NJ), Susan Longobucco-Hynes (ME), Jane Firth (CA), and Joe Privitera (CT) for making this year's contest a success.
