KENAI: RefugeRe-opens Popular Fishing Site
Alaska Region, July 1, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was able to complete repairs to one of two popular fishing walkways along the Kenai River just in time for sockeye salmon season.  The walkways, located in the Moose Range Meadows area near Soldotna, were damaged by ice and winter flooding.  Millions of dollars worth of ice damage was done to private and public facilities during the winter of 2006/2007 throughout the lower reaches of the Kenai River, and because of the layer of deposited ice, up to 15-foot high, assessment of the damage was not possible until spring thaw in early May.  Repairs were made to one of the Refuge walkways by salvaging parts from the remaining one - allowing the Refuge to open part of the area July 1.  With up to 30,000 anglers using the sites each year 2007 may bring significant crowding to the limited fishing area, yet having limited places open to fish is better than none, and plans are underway to repair the rest of the damage before the 2008 fishing season.
