Print Friendly Version

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge’s Visitor Services program hosted several special activities during April.  Molly Levite Griffis offered a book signing for her book “Paradise on the Prairie” at the bookstore in the Visitor Center.  The Visitor Center entertained 10,353 visitors during the month.  Volunteers, in conjunction with Cameron University, provided environmental education involving Project WET, Project Learning Tree, and the Leopold Education Project to 15 teachers this month.  Visitor Services staff members participated in several outreach programs this month consisting of 6,085 attendees.  The Family Fun Fair 2007 and the Honor the Child Fair were two Native American outreach programs which were held in Anadarko, OK. Norman, OK held a Kids for Kindness Earth Day Festival on April 22, 2007 in which the Refuge provided a booth.  Other highlights of the Visitor Services program include one on-site program for 16 veterans from the Norman Veterans Center.  All of these veterans, who were mostly in wheel-chairs, were very happy to be at the Refuge.  The Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center asked Randy Hale and Nick Plata to assist with a three-day fishing activity at the Veteran Center in Lawton.  Randy and Nick helped veterans with fishing and listened to veterans share their life stories during this three-day event.   A total of 1,395 students participated in educational activities at the Refuge this month.
