Buffelgrass Summit Held In Pima County
Southwest Region, February 9, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Buffelgrass, a non-native invasive grass species, is now recognized as a significant threat to the ecology of the Sonoran Desert.  On February 9, 2007, a wide variety of interested parties came together at the Buffelgrass Summit as a first step to proactively address the issue.  Nearly 150 people representing local governments, agencies (Federal, State, and Tribal), environmental groups, homeowner and neighborhood associations, and interested citizens came together to formulate a strategy of how to confront the issue of buffelgrass control in Arizona.  Arizona Ecological Services staff participated, recognizing the urgency to develop a solution for this significant threat to listed species and their habitats.  The Summit was supported at the highest levels of State government and representatives from the State Legislature attended.  Ultimately, action groups were formed to address the issues of Public Sector Coordination, Private Sector Coordination, Community Coordination, Communications, Records, Maps and Monitoring, and Response Mobilization for 2007.
