Phelps DodgeProvides Clay for Wetlands Project on San Bernardino NWR
Southwest Region, March 26, 2007
Print Friendly Version

Phelps Dodge Mining Company in southeastern Arizona provided several dumptruck loads of clay for a refuge wetlands project.  The new wetland is the second for the Hay Hollow area of the San Bernardino National Wildlife refuge.  The clay is used to line the bottoms of the ponds to prevent loss of water through the soil.  This is the second time that Phelps Dodge as generously provided clay for this project.  Last year they gave the refuge clay for the first new wetland in Hay Hollow.  These wetlands provide habitat for migrating water fowl, various other species, and offer year round habitat for two endangered fish species, the Yaqui chub and the Yaqui topminnow.
