The Tishomingo Christmas Bird Count was held on December 17th with Dr. Charles Brown once again heading up the survey. The Tishomingo CBC has taken top honors for the state of Oklahoma since 2002 and with 120 species counted this year it will certainly be at or near the top.

Dr. Charles Brown from the University of Tulsa started the Tishomingo CBC back in 1974 while he was a high school student in Sherman, Texas. He compiled the survey until 1981 with normally no more than four participants working on the survey. He returned to the Tishomingo CBC in 1996 after returning to Oklahoma from other endeavors.

The hard work to improve habitat at the refuge coupled with the rise in survey participants has proven that Tishomingo NWR is one of Oklahoma’s premier birding locations.
