Mongolians Visit Sevilleta NWR
Southwest Region, December 12, 2006
Print Friendly Version
A contingent of five prestigious members of the nation of Mongolia visited the Sevilleta NWR during December.  One provincial Governor, a ranking member of Parliament, a superintendent of a national park, an information specialist, and an interpreter were given presentations by the staff at Sevilleta NWR describing the management techniques used here.  Volunteer Sharon Wallace explained the wolf recovery efforts.  Researcher Mike Friggens of the University of New Mexico described the extensive role research activities play in management of the refuge, and DRM Dennis Prichard gave the overall picture and answered the various questions from the panel.  The visitors were especially intrigued by our efforts to reintroduce Mexican grey wolves to their former range.  In Mongolia, they advised, they have a tough time keeping the numbers of endangered Przewalski's horses up due to predation by too many wolves!  They also taught the staff about their efforts to re-establish Bactrian camels to the Gobi Desert within a Strictly Protected Area, their designation of the area as part wildlife refuge and part national park.
