CORPUS CHRISTI INNER HARBOR OIL SPILLS
Southwest Region, June 30, 2006
Print Friendly Version

Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office’s Environmental Contaminants staff responded to two spills in the Corpus Christi Inner Harbor in June.  Both occurred as a result of thunderstorms.  The Citgo Refinery spill, although small, nonetheless oiled the Texas State Aquarium marsh where numerous Brown Pelicans frequent.  The Valero Refinery spill occurred when a slop tank overflowed and was then ignited by lightening.  Approximately 4000 barrels of oil discharged into the ship channel.  Fortunately heavy rains prevented oil from entering the sensitive Tule Lake area due to flushing and prompt booming.  Eight oiled migratory birds were recovered including two Brown Pelicans.  One pelican has been released.
