Second Annual Kids Fishing Day in Mora County

Mora National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center staged the Second Annual Kids Fishing Day in Mora County on June 03, 2006.  In conjunction with Morphy Lake State Park and Las Vegas Ranger District-USDA Forest Service, this years event was held to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week and New Mexico free fishing day.

Teresa Martinez of the Fish and Wildlife Service led the effort with much assistance from Esther Nelson, Forest Service and Matthew Romero, New Mexico State Parks.  Mora provided 608 nearly two-pound rainbow trout and Red River State Fish Hatchery stocked an additional 2500 nine-inch rainbow trout.  Mora NFH&TC had 5 employees and two volunteers, Forest Service had nine employees, and State Parks and Game and Fish had ten employees on hand to assist.

Three hundred-thirty three youths under age 15 were registered surpassing last years 243 registrants.  Over one hundred fishing/outdoor prizes were donated  from various businesses and individuals and all were raffled off.

To receive a participant Tee-shirt, the young anglers had to participate at four workstation where they learned about;  invertebrate ID with Game and Fish, leave no trace outdoor ethics, Trout life cycle game, and fish  painting.  A casting contest was also held to test the abilities of the youngsters.
