Alaska Region, September 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
A bilateral U.S.-Russia Botanical Conference ?New Roots for the 21st Century? was organized and led by Mr. Steven Kohl, Division of International Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Dr. Tom Elias, Director, U.S. National Arboretum, September 19-23, 2005 at Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA. Eighty enthusiastic participants, forty from the U.S. and forty from the Russian Federation, met to discuss the most important directions for new collaborative international botanical projects. The conference was organized according to six section topics: botanical science, international agreements and cooperation, biodiversity conservation and sources of threats to plants, Arctic/northern flora, education/outreach, and promoting sustainable use of plants. For each section, two speakers, one from the U.S. and one from Russia, identified potential areas for new cooperation. For the U.S., Stephen Talbot, Division of Natural Resources, presented a talk for the Arctic/northern flora section that included Arctic/northern flora, Arctic-Beringia cooperation within the Arctic Council Working Group on Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), mapping of the circumpolar Arctic flora and vegetation, impact of global warming/climate change on northern flora, and the U.S.-Russia relationship: new avenues of cooperation in the 21st century. The proceedings of the conference will be published and will demonstrate a unique opportunity to share data for a broad geographic region.
