Native American Students Tour Sevilleta NWR
Southwest Region, August 17, 2005
Print Friendly Version
A dozen students from three Native American universities visited the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge on August 17th, 2005. The students toured the Refuge's McKenzie flats area as part of a field course on grassland management offered by the Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute. Refuge grasslands have not been grazed by domestic livestock for nearly 30 years, offering a valuable comparison to near by cattle ranches. The students also visited the Refuge's newly established prairie dog town. The town was created when prairie dogs were relocated from an urban Santa Fe Park. Other grassland species that were viewed during the field trip included burrowing owls, Swainson's hawks and a wide variety of grass hoppers.
