Service exhibits steal the show at the 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Bowling Green, VA
Southeast Region, July 27, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Southeast Regional employees, Tom Bender, and Jackie Cumpton (both with Realty, Atlanta, GA), and Dennis Stewart (Alligator River NWR, Manteo, NC), along with scores of other Service employees and volunteers from all across the nation, worked at exhibits set up at the 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree's conservation trail. This year's jamboree was held in Bowling Green, VA, from July 27 to August 3 and the Service stole the show. Some 30,000 Scouts, Scouters and visitors, who were encamped at Fort A.P. Hill, visited the trail and few of them missed the Service's exhibit. Naturally, when an exhibit is first on the trail, and has a 9-foot-tall, stuffed polar bear and live owls and raptors, it will definitely draw a crowd. And, once the people were there, the staff did a great job of educating them. The Service exhibit and the Forest Service's display were the two most talked about on the trail. Nearby Fish Hook Lake was stocked with more than 27,000 pounds of catfish and attracted more than 50,000 scouts, scouters and visitors, who took part in fishing fly fishing, fly tying, for merit badges. The primary activity going on here, however, involved the Scouts catching, cleaning, cooking, and eating all the fish they caught. Service exhibits at the lake were designed to educate the Scouts about the Service's fisheries management work. Despite the tragedy that occurred just 2 days before the Jamboree opened, when four scout leaders were electrocuted while setting up a dining tent, the scouting community and all those present pulled together to help make this a very successful Jamboree.
