2005 Kirtland's Warbler Recovery Highlights
Midwest Region, September 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Through intensive habitat management and annual brown-headed cowbird control, the Kirtland's warbler continues its dramatic comeback. The 2005 annual census counted 1,420 singing males, a remarkable increase from the historic low of 167 singing males in 1987.

Notable accomplishments include:

? On-going research in the Bahamas is providing valuable data on winter distribution, habitat selection, and home ranges. Preliminary results suggest that seasonal changes in rainfall, ground water and drought affect food availability, which in turn affects winter warbler distribution.

? Over 80 Kirtland's warblers have been banded in the Bahamas since October 2002.

? During searches in Michigan for birds banded in the Bahamas, a Kirtland's warbler fist banded as an adult in 1995 was recaptured in June, 2005. The male is at least 11 years old, the oldest Kirtland's warbler on record!

? An additional 40,000 acres will be designated as essential Kirtland's warbler habitat on State and National Forests, bringing the amount of land protected to over 190,000 acres.

? Over 1,600 people from 42 states and six foreign countries participated in guided tours offered by the USFWS, USFS and Michigan Audubon Society.

The success of the Kirtland's warbler recovery program is attributed to the strong partnerships between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture ? Wildlife Services, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, Michigan Audubon Society, and others.
