YUKON DELTA: Sending Fish to School
10 Region, September 8, 2005
Print Friendly Version
How do you send fish to school? Well, recently Yukon Delta Refuge hosted a regional 4-H Natural Resources and Youth Development teacher workshop in Bethel, Alaska. Participants included ten local teachers who learned how to conduct a coho salmon egg take and rear the salmon in a fish tank over the winter. One incubator with salmon eggs is located in the Refuge Visitor Center where visitors can watch the magic of incubating eggs. Salmon are a major source of protein for residents of the Yukon Delta. This exhibit will give students and others the rare opportunity to watch salmon develop through their life stages. Planned improvements to visitor center exhibits will explain the economic, ecological, and cultural importance of salmon to the people of the lower Kuskokwim River drainage.
