Top Honors go to The Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office
Northeast Region, August 22, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Submitted by Sandra Keppner, Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office The Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office (LGLFRO) was awarded top honors for their participation in this year's America's Fair. The fair was held in Hamburg, New York on August 10-21, 2005. As one of the largest county fairs in the nation, this event is an opportunity for the LGLFRO to raise awareness about emerging environmental issues in the lower Great Lakes region. The LGLFRO staffed a display in the Conservation Building. Partner agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also participated along with various non-profit organizations. Staff from the LGLFRO stepped up to the challenge of creating a display that met all the criteria for competitive exhibits, including theme participation. The theme of this year's fair was ?Fairy Tales Can Come True?. Approximately 8,614 people entered our underwater adventure that featured a curtain of blue with fish 'swimming? overhead. Live sturgeon captured the attention of both children and adults, fostering ?fishing stories? of days gone by. We shared our tale in a series of three posters that highlighted historic conditions in the ?Kingdom of the Lower Great Lakes?, the villains that changed our kingdom forever (pollution, habitat destruction, overexploitation, and invasive species), and finally the importance of a unified community committed to making a difference. The LGLFRO display was awarded the First Place Premium Blue Ribbon.
