NM Ecological Services Presentation on Conservation Incentives for Private Landowners
Southwest Region, August 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Staff from the New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (PFW) gave a presentation to a group of young farmers and ranchers who were attending business training sponsored by Farm Credit of New Mexico's Educational Institute in Albuquerque. The talk was given at the request of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau (NMFLB) and was entitled, Opportunities and Incentives to Manage New Mexico Private Lands for Wildlife. Topics covered included: private lands and conservation in America today; importance of private lands in meeting the nation's environmental goals; various government programs that offer financial and technical assistance for conservation practices; Endangered Species Act landowner tools (Safe Harbor Agreements, etc); and a primer on assistance grants basics, e.g., applying for assistance, reimbursable accounts, concepts of cost-sharing & leveraging funding, reporting requirements, etc. The presentation was well-received and was followed by an in-depth question and answer session. The topic that generated the most interest was Safe Harbor Agreements and Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances, evidencing both a concern among landowners about listed species but also a willingness to consider and implement solutions. PFW staff has been invited to speak at next year's business training and at the NMFLB annual meeting in November. Both of these venues present ideal forums to continue marketing conservation to agricultural producers.
