VAFO Completes Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle Comprehensive Survey
Northeast Region, August 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle (Cicindela dorsalis dorsalis) is a federally listed beetle associated with sandy beach areas. Its historic range was from Massachusetts to Virginia. Other than one population on Martha's Vineyard, and two in New Jersey, the remaining populations can be found along the Chesapeake Bay (Bay) shorelines. The Maryland populations are relatively stable, but isolated from the core populations found on Virginia's portion of the Bay. A contract was made with Barry Knisley of Randolph Macon College, Virginia, to survey the eastern shoreline of the Bay. This allowed the VAFO staff to complete a survey of the western shoreline. This is the first time that all core populations on both sides of the Chesapeake Bay were surveyed in one year. The primary reason for these surveys is to collect population trend data needed for protection and restoration of the species. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused extensive shoreline flooding and erosion along the western shoreline of the Bay. The 2004 western shoreline survey found the beetles numbers reduced by over 63%. The 2005 survey found that the beetles have started to rebound (59% increase from the 2004 numbers), but their numbers are still down by almost 42% from 2001 (pre-Isabel numbers).
