TETLIN: Local Kids Go High Tech to Learn About Moose
Alaska Region, July 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Last fall, Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge initiated a cooperative community project to incorporate real-time data collected from satellite marked moose into local school curriculums. During the 2004/2005 school year, five teachers from three local schools participated in the program. Each week, the teachers received current satellite locations for their students to map. The Refuge's education coordinator and subsistence biologist also made several classroom visits and coordinated field trips throughout the year. Through this program, our local students have gained hands-on experience in wildlife research techniques while learning about wildlife ecology and behavior. At the end of the school year, two teachers and six students also had the chance to tag along during moose radio-telemetry flights in the Refuge's airplane. This project has thus far proved to be an excellent opportunity for interaction between Refuge staff and local teachers, students, and the community.
