2005 Northeastern Illinois Wetland Conservation Grants Awarded
Midwest Region, June 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On June 14, 2005, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Chicago Illinois Field Office and The Conservation Fund announced the recipients of year 2005 grants from the Northeastern Illinois Wetlands Conservation Account (NEIWCA). Approximately $265,000 in grants were awarded for the restoration, enhancement and creation of wetlands in Northeast Illinois. In 2005, NEIWCA leveraged approximately $402,000 in matching funds or in-kind services to be provided by the successful applicants, who will restore or enhance approximately 275 acres of wetlands or hydrologically associated uplands. Projects funded in 2005 were located in four northeast Illinois counties:

Kane County:

1) Campton Township will restore 68 acres of its Corron farm Wetland.

2) The St. Charles Park District will enhance 1.5 acres of Ferson Creek Fen, a dedicated State Nature Preserve.

3) The Fox Valley Land Foundation will restore 9 acres of The Fox River Fen State Nature Preserve.

4) The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will enhance 40 acres of its Freeman Kame/Meagher Wetland Preserve.

Lake County:

1) Country Club Meadows Homeowners Association will enhance 34 acres of marsh habitat.

2) The Lake County Forest Preserve District will restore 45 acres of its Gander Mountain Fen.

McHenry County:

1) The McHenry County Conservation District will restore 60 acres of emergent wetland at its Pickerel Creek Marsh Preserve.

Will County:

1) The Forest Preserve District of Will County will enhance breeding habitat of the federally endangered Hines Emerald Dragonfly at the south unit of its Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve.

NEIWCA is the result of a unique partnership between The Conservation Fund, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S> Fish & Wildlife Service's Chicago Illinois Field Office. This fund was created with settlement funds from a corporate wetlands infraction, and has in part been augmented with subsequent payments from this and other wetland violations.

Projects are selected on a competitive basis depending on several combined factors, including: (1) the quality of plans to restore and conserve degraded wetland wildlife habitats, (2) ability to provide or leverage matching funds or in-kind support, and (3) potential educational benefits. In 11 separate award cycles since 1997, NEIWCA has funded restoration of wetlands and associated habitats throughout the Chicago area. The account has contributed approximately $3.3 million to groups working on 96 individual projects in six northeastern Illinois counties: Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will.
