May 2005 update: Atlantic white cedar salvage and restoration at Great Dismal Swamp refuge
10 Region, May 31, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The salvage operation that began on May 20 in the Atlantic white cedar stands damaged by Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 had sent 45,000 board-feet of cedar timber valued at $4,500 to a local mill by the end of May. The contractor, Carson Helicopters, is considering adding two more cutting units, which could triple that rate by the end of June. Salvage plans also call for helicopters to arrive in the fall to haul trees out of inaccessible locations. The operation also removed 125 tons of forest fuel from five acres. Fortunately, despite numerous lightning strikes during several thunderstorms, no wildfires started in the wet and cool month of May. Many Atlantic white cedar seedlings have begun to sprout in the 70 acres salvaged in 2004. An application of herbicide in September weakened competing vegetation. This large-scale restoration is attracting much interest. Reporters from the Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press are expected to write articles in June. Wire services picked up their reports in 2004, focusing national attention on the restoration of this globally rare forest type. U.S. Department of the Interior fire management administrators may visit the refuge this summer. Studies have shown that several species of neotropical migratory birds favor nesting in the Atlantic white cedar forests, and some species of rare butterflies and moths thrive there as well.
