Lower Suwannee NWR assists with saving bat pups
Southeast Region, May 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
After thousands of bat pups dropped from the large bat house on the University of Florida campus in 2004, local veterinarian, Deborah Cottrell, contacted Lower Suwannee NWR Biologist Steve Barlow (http://lowersuwannee.fws.gov) for help. Steve called his contacts with Bat Conservation International, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, University of Florida Department of Environmental Health and Safety to gain support and devise a plan. After consultation, an attachment was built for one of the four bat house entry panels; heavy equipment was used to lift the wooden addition and the installers to the bat house. The goal is to ascertain if the modified panel will prevent pups from falling, yet allow entrance and egress as needed as well as guano to fall to the ground. Monitoring to determine if the new design helps prevent the falling of bat pups will be provided by volunteers under the guidance of Dr. Cottrell. A great partnership in action.
