Spring Wings highlights migratory shorebirds

Bird lovers had a unique opportunity to explore a springtime ?birds-eye view? of the Outer Banks with the inauguration of Spring Wings, a condensed version of the annual Wings Over Water Fall Festival, that was held Thursday, May 12 ? Sunday, May 15. Renowned ornithologist and former dean of Georgetown and Fordham Universities, William Stott, Jr., gave the event's keynote address, ?The Wonder of Shorebirds? on Friday evening at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Stott talked about the geographical and seasonal distribution of these amazing migratory birds, their biology and ecology, and the particular challenges of field identification. The next day, Saturday, May 14, Stott led an early-morning shorebird excursion, at Oregon Inlet and the Pea Island National Wildlife. This festival offers everything from paddling trips and wolf howlings to pelagic trips and Owl Prowls.
