Atlantic White Cedar Restoration at Great Dismal Swamp NWR
10 Region, May 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The salvage of Atlantic white cedar forests that were severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel began on May 20 when personnel and equipment from Carson Helicopters, Inc. rolled into the Great Dismal Swamp NWR. Tree harvesting began on Saturday, May 21, and will likely be in operation seven days a week for at least the next 6-8 months. Specialized ground-based tree harvesting equipment will be cutting trees and sending the product to a local mill through the end of June. Plans call for helicopters to arrive by fall to haul trees from refuge locations that are inaccessible to ground-based transportation, with the timber being distributed to national and possibly international markets.
