Washington County Community College in Calais, ME , completed an estimated $244K dollars in road and water control structure maitenance in 2004 at Moosehorn NWR. The college trains students at the refuge in the operation of heavy equipment, construction, erosion control and in other areas which prepare studnets for careers in construction. The college graded 23 miles of refuge road, mowed 15 miles of roadside, cleaned 11 miles of ditching, repaired two water control structures and installed 4 new gates during 2004. Students learn proper erosion control and how to take a project from excavation to the final seeding of grasses after the proper is complete. A great partnership which provides training for the students and a solution for the refuge's $6.5 millon dollar maintenance backlog. The college has meet with the refuge to plan the Fall 2005 construction program.
