Volunteers Adopt Canaan Valley Refuge Trails
Northeast Region, April 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Volunteers have adopted the Canaan Valley refuge trails and have committed to maintain them at least four times a year, in the Adopt-a-Trail program developed by refuge volunteers Andy and Bruce Dalton of the refuge friends association. They divided the trails into different sections on maps developed by refuge biologist Leah Ceperley, and created a "Maintainers Guide" to duties and responsibilities that also incorporated safety and a mission: "The mission of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Adopt-a-Trail project is to maintain existing refuge trails that provide visitors opportunities to observe, learn about, and photograph nature. We strive to maintain the primitive nature of the trails so as to minimize their impact on the natural resources and surroundings while providing a relatively safe pathway through the refuge."

On April 30, eight people participated in Adopt-A-Trail training on tools and safety led by the Daltons, Deputy Refuge Manager Erin Holmes and refuge biologist Ken Sturm, creating a waterbar on the Brown Mountain trail in the morning and hiking down the Delta 13 trail in the afternoon.
