Journal Entry   Back New Mexico Youth Challenge Cadets Restore Ponds at Dexter NFH&TC Southwest Region, March 11, 2005 Print Friendly Version The New Mexico Youth Challenge Cadets (YCC) program combined efforts with the Dexter National Fish Hatchery & Technology Center (Center) in March to restore ponds that will house endangered broodstock, as well as production fish. The YCC is an academy that is modeled after the military. It is a 22-week course that gives cadets an opportunity to complete their GED, receive jobs skills training, physical fitness training and participate in community projects. The cadet's ages range from 16-18 and are from various parts of New Mexico. Over 40 cadets, in cadence were marched to the work site by cadre personnel. These cadets worked along side Center staff in the restoration of the ponds. The Center has become a place for these cadets to experience job skills and the knowledge that they are part of the effort to conserve and protect endangered species. Combining efforts with the youth of New Mexico provide hands-on experience to the cadets, and significantly contributes to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's mission in educating the public and leaders of tomorrow.
