Journal Entry   Back NM Ecological Services provides Biological Opinion on Bandelier Natl Monument 10-yr Fire Mgmt Plan Southwest Region, February 25, 2005 Print Friendly Version On February 24, 2005, the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office completed a formal consultation with the Bandelier National Monument located in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. The biological opinion evaluated the proposal to implement a 10-year fire management plan within the National Park Service's Bandelier National Monument. The proposed fire management plan will guide all aspects of the fire and fuels management program including fire suppression, wildland fire use for resource benefit, prescribed fire, non-fire fuel treatments (e.g., manual and mechanical thinning), and monitoring and adaptive management. The proposed project is expected to assist the National Park Service in reintroducing and managing fire in their forested ecosystems within the action area. Through consultation, the proposed action will lessen the threat of wildfire to the threatened Mexican spotted owl and its designated critical habitat. As a result, we anticipate that intensive, destructive fires will likely occur less frequently on the Monument, and the proposed treatments will minimize the risk of wildfire damage to life, property, and natural resources, including the Mexican spotted owl and its critical habitat.
