Partners Provide Funds for Plant Nursery and Habitat Restoration at Umatilla NWR
Pacific Region, September 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Funds from a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant were matched by seven local and national partners to restore wetland and riparian habitats on the Umatilla NWR in northeastern Oregon. Surface excavation and shoreline re-contouring were completed in late summer for the restoration of wetlands and edge habitats on the McCormack Unit of the Refuge. A fenced enclosure was constructed to keep the large refuge mule deer herd and other animals from damaging young trees and shrubs to be planted in the new riparian edges created by the project.

Umatilla NurseryIn addition, a fenced native plant nursery was constructed and will be used for the propagation of native willows and other native local trees and shrubs. By the spring of 2005 and Phase III of the project, the nursery is expected to be able to supply sufficient cuttings to restore the new riparian areas created by the project.

Total expenditures in the first two phases of the project have totaled $96,167 including the NFWF Grant of $43,700 and partner contributions totalling $45,347. Other partners matching the NFWF grant included Ducks Unlimited who provided planning and survey work, and several local businesses and groups including: The Trading Post, Fredrickson Farms, Friends of the Mid-Columbia River Refuges, Pheasants Forever, Boy Scouts of America, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
