National Wildlife Refuge Week Celebration at Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge
Pacific Region, October 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On Saturday, October 16, the staff of Willamette Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex hosted a celebration of National Wildlife Week at Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge. Events included early morning bird walks, management talks and ?hands on? activities for the younger visitors such as making bird feeders, coloring pictures of wildlife and exploring an assortment of antlers, skulls and pelts. Management talks covered recent wet prairie habitat restoration efforts and wetland management.

The early morning bird walks explored the area along the Rail Trail boardwalk. Other events and activities were based in a tent set up at the Eagle Marsh Wildlife Viewing Area. The Eagle Marsh Kiosk also provided excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Throughout the day, visitors could see thousands of ducks and geese in Eagle Marsh. Bald eagles and peregrine falcons were seen flying through the area.

The National Wildlife Refuge Week event at Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge provided environmental education and outreach to 210 visitors. The Refuge is located about 10 miles south of Salem, Oregon and provides some of the best waterfowl viewing opportunities in the Willamette Valley from October through April.
