Chesapeake Bay Coastal Program Contributes to Monocacy Management Area Forest Restoration

The Chesapeake Bay Field Office Coastal Program teamed with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Forest Service recently to restore 10 acres of broadleaf forest habitat in the Monocacy Natural Resources Management Area near the mouth of Monocacy Creek on the Potomac River. The field office purchased 4,500 oak, walnut, and ash seedlings for the project to convert a farm field into upland deciduous forest. In addition to restoring habitat, the project will test seedling survival and growth under four different planting and seedling protection regimes. Results will be applied to other restoration projects in Maryland to help managers design tree planting systems that fit their budget and needs.

Through the project, ten acres of upland migratory bird habitat were restored and a partnership with the Maryland DNR Forest Service was enhanced.
