E. B. Forsythe NWR Celebrates National Wildlife Refuge Week and Make a Difference Day
Northeast Region, October 23, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Nearly 600 visitors flocked to Forsythe on October 23rd to celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week and Make a Difference Day. Families enjoyed nature walks, trolley and van tours of the Wildlife Drive, and canoe trips to the Brigantine Wilderness area. Since September 3, 2004 marked the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Wilderness Act, the theme focused on wilderness. We also celebrated the upcoming 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Brigantine Wilderness area: on January 3, 1975, Congress designated 6,603 acres of this refuge as Wilderness. Leave No Trace Walk for Wilderness Stations were set up along one of the Refuge's nature trails. Many of the 100 Boy and Girl Scouts who participated in our Make a Difference Day project (working with our volunteers in an educational native plant and wildlife garden to experience first-hand the act of stewardship), participated in the Stations and accomplished some of their badge requirements. President's Call to Service Awards and Congressional Citations were presented to volunteers Dr. Ed Bristow and Ed Jones. A Congressional Citation was also awarded to this year's Refuge Volunteer of the Year, Al Reichenbach. On October 26th, Refuge Manager Steve Atzert attended a Township meeting to accept a Proclamation from the Township of Galloway, proclaiming October as the 30th anniversary of the Brigantine Wilderness.
