Mechanical Wildland Urban Interface project completed at Deer Flat NWR
Pacific Region, September 24, 2004
Print Friendly Version
With the cities of Nampa and Caldwell surrounding most of Deer Flat NWR, the majority of the refuge is now within a Wildlife Urban Interface (WUI). In an effort to reduce hazardous fuel, the refuge was funded through WUI money for mechanical treatment of 30 acres of brush piles These brush piles were the result of a Russian olive tree removal project. This species creates dense stands of ladder fuels that can ignite trees that are taller and more beneficial to wildlife (such as cottonwoods). A side benefit of this project has been the removal of exotic vegetation thus providing more open space and providing opportunity for more native species to become established.

Brush piles were chipped in place with a large tub grinder under a contract with a local vendor. Chips were then spread by refuge staff. We expect this mulch cover to assist in preventing noxious weeds, thereby reducing fine fuels that are easily ignited while also helping to reduce the amount of herbicide used on the refuge. The chips also added a much needed organic layer that will help improve soils.
