Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge Expands Volunteer Program
Pacific Region, September 18, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Volunteers have been increasing their contributions to Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge the last couple years. In fiscal year 2004, volunteers contributed nearly 1000 hour in completing a variety of refuge projects. This number is up from 670 the previous year, a 49% increase! On September 19th, the refuge held its second annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic at Celebration Park on the Snake River. Activities included a pot luck lunch followed by a boat trip up the river to view refuge islands, the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, and some archaeological sites.

Project completed with the help of volunteers included biological activities such as goose and eagle nesting surveys; duck banding; and building, installing, and cleaning of wood duck boxes; visitor service activities included staffing the Visitor Center on Saturdays, creating original artwork, and taking photos to use in environmental education, interpretation, and outreach; and maintenance activities included trash pick up and help with planting a water-conservation demonstration garden.

Two Boy Scouts are actively working on Eagle Scout projects on the refuge. One scout is planning a disabled-accessible hunting blind (scheduled for completion in Summer 2005). The other is working on a butterfly and hummingbird garden behind the Visitor Center.
