Gila trout stocking into Mogollon Creek
Southwest Region, October 14, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Gila trout from the South Diamond lineage and produced at Mora National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center were stocked into East Fork Mogollon Creek on the western side of the Gila Wilderness on 14 October 2004. A total of 1042 fish, average total length 87 mm, were stocked in the lower portion of the creek as part of efforts to restore Gila trout and protect the South Diamond lineage. These fish were the first to be produced under the guidance of a genetic broodstock management plan for the South Diamond lineage. The management plan provides for measures to ensure maximum retention of genetic diversity = 'wild' trait maintenance by using only wild fish in broodstock development. The fish were transported by Mora personnel to the 74 Mountain Trailhead where biologists of New Mexico Fishery Resources Office used pack and riding mules to transport the fish approximately 10 miles into the wilderness location for stocking in an unoccupied stream reach.
