Sewee's Junior Birder Program
Southeast Region, October 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
In August, the Sewee Environmental Education Center at the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in Awendaw, South Carolina, implemented a junior birder conservation program for children ages six to eight. Twenty young birders are learning to use field guides and binoculars, learning bird characteristics for field identification, and recording their observations in journals. Over the course of 6 weeks, they will complete activities which will help them become more aware of how they can protect birds and their habitats. Upon completion of the activities, the children will receive a certificate and junior birder patch. Tricia Lynch, park ranger for Cape Romain, will mentor the children through the self-paced program.
