Service's Environmental Measures Will Protect Assabet River Water Quality Under FERC Order
Northeast Region, August 19, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has issued an order accepting the surrender of the exempted Clock Tower Place Hydroelectric Project in Maynard, Mass. The order adopts environmental measures recommended or prescribed by the Northeast Regional Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The measures include modifying canal headgates to ensure that all stream flows up to 39 cubic feet per second pass through the natural riverbed. Also included is a delay in the effective date of the surrender until the dam owner provides documentation that the gate modifications are complete.

The measures will protect wildlife habitat and water quality in the 5,400 foot-long reach of river between the Ben Smith Dam and the project tailrace and in the Assabet River downstream of the project area. That river segment includes a stretch of the federally-designated Assabet River Wild and Scenic River.
