Herring Gulls Numbers Bring Decline of Other Beach-Nesting Birds At Fisherman Island Refuge
Northeast Region, July 29, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Gull nesting continues to increase on Virginia's Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge, and royal tern, American oystercatcher and brown pelican numbers continue to decline. In response, refuge staff have begun a control program for herring gull populations. Refuge staff have addled eggs in 200 gull nests during the breeding season by spraying them with mineral oil.

Seven hundred forty-seven gull nests (addled and not addled) were counted in May. At least 638 of these were herring gull nests, which is an increase of 25 percent from last year's count of 477 herring gull nests. Refuge staff are working with a researcher at Clemson University to obtain funds to evaluate the adverse effects of gulls on the productivity of other beach-nesting birds during the 2005 breeding season.
