Research Project:
Field Testing Usda/ars Citrus Rootstock and Scion Selections in California
Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research
Project Number: 6618-21000-013-01
Project Type:
Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 04, 2004
End Date: Sep 30, 2009
Objective:
To ensure that citrus rootstock and scion selections developed by ARS in Florida are evaluated for commercial potential in the major citrus growing regions of California.
Approach:
Identify and develop genetic sources of germplasm and combine desirable traits through hybridization. Develop techniques to overcome genetic barriers and seek solutions for enhancing fruit appearance, quality, juice, content, maturity, and yield. Develop new scions/rootstocks, select and evaluate under various climatic and cultural conditions for cold and drought resistance, viruses, root rot, weevils, nematodes, soil salinity, dieback; apomictic reproduction; breeding compatibility/depression; and tree size control.
