U.S. agriculture faces a world of new technologies, varying consumer preferences, evolving market structures, and shifting trade patterns that present multiple challenges to commodity producers. Adding to the complexity, domestic and international policy developments and emerging trade agreements require regular attention and adjustment.
As agricultural policy deliberations proceed in the United States and as the Doha Round of World Trade Organization negotiations continues, ERS is producing a series of commodity background reports. Each report focuses on a single commodity or commodity group, examining the economic characteristics of selected industries and providing analysis of conditions and trends in production, markets, and the policy environment. Together, the backgrounders offer a broad picture of U.S. agriculture.
