Abstract

The Muscular Dystrophy Association, (MDA), is a voluntary health agency aimed at conquering more than 40 neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. The diseases in MDA's program include nine forms of muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, (Lou Gehrig's disease)spinal muscular atrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease,and other neuromuscular conditions. MDA has nearly 200 local offices across the country. It conducts program of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public education. Services include medical examinations at a network of some 235 hospital-affiliated MDA clinics, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with wheelchair purchase and communication devices.

Publications

MDA resource materials include a variety of publications and videotapes. Serial publications: Quest is a bi-monthly magazine with circulation of 125,000 reports on the latest research findings and issues of living with a neuromuscular disease. The MDA/ALS Newsmagazine is a monthly newsletter for those who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their families/caregivers. Annual Report--information on MDA programs, research activities, medical services, fund-raising, and educational programs, as well as such organizational data as financial statements.
