CDC Addresses Heart Disease

CDC's public health efforts to address heart disease include these and other programs.

State Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program

CDC currently funds health departments in 41 states and the District of Columbia to develop effective strategies to reduce the burden of heart disease and stroke and their risk factors. The program stresses the need for policy and systems changes that promote heart–healthy and stroke–free living and working conditions. For more information, see CDC's State Program Web pages.

A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke

The purpose of the Action Plan is to chart a course to help achieve national goals to prevent heart disease and stroke. The National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention has been established to address and carry out targeted recommendations and specific action steps. Healthy People 2010

The federal government's prevention agenda for building a healthier nation. There are 16 health objectives specific to heart disease and stroke, and 46 more in areas that relate to heart disease and stroke. CDC is the co–lead agency with the National Institutes of Health for the heart disease and stroke focus area. For more information, see CDC's HealthyPeople 2010 Web pages.

WISEWOMAN

WISEWOMAN is a CDC–funded program that helps women without insurance gain access to screening and lifestyle interventions that can reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases. CDC funds 21 WISEWOMAN projects in 20 states, which operate on the local level in states and tribal organizations. For more information, see the WISEWOMAN Web site.
