What are Wetlands? Wetlands, like soils, trees, fields, rivers, hills, and other natural resources, are vital components of the Indiana landscape. Wetlands serve important functions, both in human benefits such as maintaining the quality of the water we drink and controlling flooding, and in environmental benefits such as providing habitat for endangered species of wildlife and plants. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates, 85% of Indiana wetlands have been filled or drained for development, or converted to agriculture. Local, state and federal regulatory agencies with jurisdiction over wetlands may define and describe wetlands differently than in the NWI. Wetlands on the NWI maps were identified from aerial photographs based on vegetation, visible hydrology and geography. Wetland maps measure 24' x 36' and cover an area of approximately 58 square miles. All maps are printed at a scale of 1:24,000 and use the same grid as USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangles. Click here to determine map needed. NOTE: This quad locator map is only intended to assist the user locate specific quads.
