The American Poultry Historical Society was organized in 1952. According to the book American Poultry History 1823-1973, "The purpose of the [society] is to find, collect, and preserve records, pictures, materials and objects connected with the development of the poultry industry and to make available its great history to this and future generations, and to honor or recognize persons for outstanding achievement or leadership." The inspiration of the formation of the society (and a Hall of Fame, which was formed in 1954) came from similar developments in the dairy industry. The APHS wanted to form an independent and inclusive organization that would serve all types of interest in the poultry industry, from "fanciers" to commercial poultry breeders.
