  Academics > Arts and Humanities

In the arts and humanities, scholars, artists and students explore the range of creative expression and thought, past and present, in languages and literature, the visual arts, music, film, dramatic art, philosophy, and the classics. Faculty and students in the arts and humanities include not only scholars, critics, and historians of culture and the arts, but also creative writers, composers, painters, and sculptors.

The study and appreciation of music, art, literature and cultural traditions contribute to the well-being of society and serve as the basis for informed reflection upon the ethics and values that determine our humanity.

UC Arts in the Community Programs

The convergence of electronic art, media and technology is transforming our society and the commercial demand for talented practitioners is growing rapidly. Today's students need an understanding of not only how to use tools for creating new media, but how to think strategically about the productive processes in which they are involved. Santa Barbara's Media Arts and Technology Graduate Program and UCLA's Department of Design | Media Arts are just two of UC's multimedia training grounds. And check out some of the streaming video projects at Riverside's Digital Studio, which takes these tools into the community.
