Mobility, Activity and Function

Many veterans face increased risks of functional limitations in mobility and physical activity that lessen quality of life. These limitations are often the consequences of health conditions or injuries, but also may lead to developing additional health conditions, impairments and functional deficits. A critical mission of VA health care is to decrease morbidity and promote functional independence, increase physical activity, and enhance quality of life. Without appropriate clinical care, a veteran's quality of life is threatened by disability, and the resource utilization of providing effective patient-centered care increases. Health services research to identify, evaluate and understand health conditions and health-related factors that may precipitate or increase the risk of diminished functional status is part of HSR&D's effort to support quality health care for veterans. This portfolio includes research on a wide array of interventions to decrease morbidity and illness drawn from traditional approaches such as exercise and counseling as well as complementary and alternative practices to improve mobility, increase activity and promote functional independence. This is a recently established HSR&D portfolio area whose issues are incorporated across several areas of the current HSR&D Priorities Program Announcement.
