Abundant harvests throughout Europe and the Former Soviet Union have sharply reduced import needs this year. Conversely, world wheat import demand has shifted more to Asia, where shrinking stocks have caused China and Pakistan to return as major importers. Other Asian countries are also expanding imports due to steady food consumption growth and, in certain markets, increased feed demand. The United States and Australia have been the primary beneficiaries of this higher demand as a result of their relative proximity to Asia. U.S. sales to Asia currently account for nearly half of total sales, compared to less than a third last year. Australia has also focused more on these nearby markets, helping to boost total exports. Competition, however, could strengthen from Argentina, as supplies from a near-record crop have started to be sold into some Asian markets. |
