Friday Global Crop Condition Brief

The following series of graphics highlight notable weather and crop developments in key production areas. Featured countries/regions this week are China, India, and the United States.

Global Crop Condition Watch, Aug. 31, 2001

China - Pockets of dryness persist in the North China Plain. Showers benefited corn and soybeans in Manchuria. Moisture supplies remain adequate across central and southern China.

India - The monsoon remained active across eastern rice areas, but showed signs of retreating from the northwest. In the south, mostly dry, warm weather continued to reduce moisture reserves for oilseeds in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

United States - Long Term Drought Index

United States - 7 Day Cumulative Precipitation through Aug. 28, 2001

Wildfires continued to break out across the Western United States.  California, Idaho, and Montana were impacted the most.  Following are satellite views of California fires during August.

NOAA 16 - Timeseries - California - four 2001 images of Northern California:  May 18, showing flooded rice fields in the Sacramento Valley, June 2, showing rice emerging, August 18, showing a large fire covering parts of Colusa, Lake, and Glenn counties, and finally, August 28, a view of the "Star" fire in Placer County.
Landsat 7 scene of Northern California  - August 13 view of the Sacramento Valley and a portion of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  A fire is clearly visible in Placer Co., near I-80.
