The following series of graphics highlight notable weather and crop developments in key production areas. Featured countries/regions this week are India, Canada, and the United States.

Global Crop Condition Watch, Aug. 17, 2001

India: Monsoon rains continue to favor summer crops and oil seeds; Persistent dryness continues across the south.

Canadian Prairies: dry and warm weather returned to the western prairies, hastening maturation of spring grains and stressing oil seeds; rain was unwelcome in eastern Manitoba which has suffered from a wet and cool growing season.

United States - Long Term Drought Index

United States - 7 Day Cumulative Precipitation through Aug. 16, 2001

Due to long term drought and recent hot weather, numerous fires broke out across the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. Smoke from these fires is clearly visible from these NOAA Polar Orbiter satellite images.
